Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821-1906)

Hercules Brabazon Brabazon was born in Italy and began painting in the 1840s. He was influenced by the great colourists from Vel?squez to Turner. When his first work was exhibited (secretly by Whistler) in 1892 the contemporary world was startled by it's modernity. After his death, fashion and taste changed and his work lost it's audience. In 1926 his indebted heirs flooded the market with his paintings but it was another fifty years before the significance of this subtle genius was once again appreciated, his reputation restored and his work again valued.
