Jay Hall Connaway (1893-1970)
Jay Connaway was born in Liberty, Indiana. He studied at the Art Students League with Frederick Bridgeman and with William Merrit Chase. He also studied at the Academie Julian in Paris with Laurens, at the National Academy of Design in New York City and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was a full academician at the National Academy of Design. He spent a great part of his life on Monhegan Island in Maine where he ran Connaway?s Monhegan School of Art. During his life time he had numerous one-man exhibitions in various museums. His work is in many important private collections and public institutions.
