Sir Alfred Munnings KVCO, PRA (1878-1959)
Born in Mendham, Suffolk, Alfred Munnings showed a talent for drawing at an early age and was apprenticed to a firm of lithographers when only fourteen. Later he studied at the Norwich School of Art and Academie Julian in Paris. He painted many scenes of country life, particularly horse fairs and after a trip to Paris in 1904 he began traveling around East Anglia in a caravan, accompanied by several ponies. He visited Cornwall in 1908 and joined Harold and Laura Knight where he became an important addition to the Newlyn circle. In 1919 he painted his first racehorse, the winner of the Grand National and was made an Associate of the Royal Academy. During his sixty year career painting he won both fame and honors. He was elected the President of the Royal Academy, received a Knighthood and a personal award from the Sovereign in 1947 , when he was created Knight Commander of the Victorian Order.
