Paolo Smali (b.1969)

Paolo Smali was born in Belluno, Italy in 1969. He studied in the studio of Master Luigi Tito (1907-1991) and earned his diploma at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice in 1991. His studio is presently in Guidecca in Venice. He has been granted the rare privilege to paint one month each year in the Louvre in Paris. He has exhibited widely in Italy, and Paris. His work has recently been accepted by a museum in Paris. Smali rejects labels such as ?neo-figurative? but believes himself to be a continuer rather than a reviver of artistic tradition. A change in critical attitudes in the last twenty years has led to a general re-evaluation of nineteenth Italian academic art and that of the twentieth-century movement. Modern day artists such as Smali with his elaborate control of light and his pure form and traditional approach to painting will surely be one of the foremost young painters of this new century.
