Karl Weschke (1925-2005)


Karl Weschke was born in Germany and came to the United Kingdom as a Second World War prisoner. Aside from a short period at St Martin's School of Art in London he was self a taught artist. He had his first one-man show in London in 1958, was an Arts Council major award winner, recipient of the John Moore prize, and made an honorary Doctor of Arts by Plymouth University. A long time resident of Cornwall, he was subject to a solo exhibition at the Tate Gallery in St Ives in 2004. See the publication "Karl Weschke: Portrait of a Painter" by Jeremy Lewison.
